As a personal trainer in Windsor, I want to share the best health and fitness tips that help me keep my body fit and healthy. These are also principles I believe my clients should follow. If you’re already doing some of these, that’s great—keep it up because it will help you maintain your fitness for life. Otherwise, to get started, choose the 5 elements you want to try and integrate them into your daily routine.
1. Hydration
Hydration is key to a healthy body. You need to get enough fluids throughout the day. If you find it difficult to drink water because it’s not directly in front of you, start carrying a water bottle with you for easy access. Our bodies are made up of 50-65% water.
2. Balanced Nutrition
A balanced diet that includes plenty of vegetables, a variety of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats is good for your health. All of these are necessary for your body to function properly. You should monitor where you get each of these types of nutrients and vary them regularly. Variety in your food is a great way to ensure you don’t lack vitamins and minerals.
3. Eat vegetables more than 5 times a day
Eating enough vegetables will ensure you get all the micronutrients you need for a healthy body. If you don’t eat at least 5 different types of vegetables a day, it could mean you have a deficiency. I would recommend aiming for 7-10 different types per day. You should know which foods provide certain vitamins so you can include those vegetables in your diet.
4. Move every day
Daily movement is necessary to maintain health and fitness. This can be achieved with yoga, exercise, or even just walking. This will ensure your body’s blood is oxygenated, releases endorphins, and burns calories throughout the day.
5. Do specialized strength training
Strength training builds strength in specific muscles. As we age, our bodies can begin to lose muscle mass. You should prevent this, as it’s a natural process that occurs after age 40. Start strength training by focusing on large, complex movements. You can do this at home with dumbbells or weights. Or ask a personal trainer to help you figure out what to do.
6. Stretch and Move Your Body
With age, the body naturally becomes less mobile, especially if you lead a sedentary lifestyle. Stretching the muscles on the back of your body will help you maintain flexibility. This will help you avoid back pain and other problems that arise from a sedentary lifestyle.
7. Breathe
Breathe properly. If you feel lethargic or tired during the day, it may be because you’re not getting enough oxygen to your body. Take deep breaths to fill your lungs completely. Do this every day. It will help you wake up and feel better in many ways. Otherwise, your brain will function more slowly because it consumes 20% of the oxygen we inhale. Your heart won’t function as efficiently, which can cause your extremities to get cold. Additionally, a lack of oxygen can cause your muscles to stiffen.
8. Work on the health of your cardiovascular system
Cardiovascular training is amazing. You feel on top of the world. If your health and fitness are in good shape and you can go for a run or do a HIIT workout, you should. It releases hormones in the body that make us feel good, and it’s a great way to get rid of depressive thoughts and anxieties. I know many people who have found that cardio helps them manage anxiety.
9. Reduce your sugar intake
Experts say that sugar is associated with many diseases and ailments in the Western world. Reducing your intake can help you in many ways. You won’t have insulin spikes that throw your blood sugar levels off balance. You’ll feel more energetic and, as a result, you’ll lose fat. It’s a win-win situation.
10. Get enough sleep, at least 8 hours or more
Sleep allows your body to recover and heal. If you experience soreness while exercising, sleep is used to repair the muscle tissue that was broken down during exercise. If you don’t get enough sleep, you feel like you have less energy during the day and therefore start consuming more calories.
